Selling partner

Updated

Who a selling partner is, how it authorizes an SP-API application, and which marketplaces belong to which region.

As Amazon publishes it

Every statement on this page restates Amazon's public documentation, linked under Sources.

Who a selling partner is

A selling partner is a seller or a vendor selling through Amazon's stores. A selling partner grants an application permission to call the Selling Partner API (SP-API) on its behalf. The application then reads and changes only that selling partner's data, within the roles it was granted.

Authorization

  • Public applications are authorized by the selling partner through OAuth, in one of two workflows that differ only in where they start: from the Selling Partner Appstore, or from the application's own website. Both complete through browser redirects between Amazon and the application's website.
  • Private applications are self-authorized: the developer's own organization authorizes the application in Seller Central, Vendor Central or the Solution Provider Portal, with no authorization flow to implement.

Redirect parameters

At the end of the website workflow Amazon redirects to the application with three parameters:

  • state — the value the application generated and put into the authorization URI.
  • selling_partner_id — the identifier of the selling partner who authorized the application.
  • spapi_oauth_code — a Login with Amazon (LWA) authorization code, exchanged for an LWA refresh token.

Tokens and renewal

  • The authorization code expires after five minutes.
  • It is exchanged at the LWA token endpoint (https://api.amazon.com/auth/o2/token) with grant_type=authorization_code; later access tokens are obtained with grant_type=refresh_token.

Yearly reauthorization

Reauthorization is required annually, and also whenever existing selling partners must authorize new roles for the application. Amazon recommends tracking token age and prompting selling partners to reauthorize every year.

Marketplaces per region

Each selling partner sells in one or more marketplaces. Each marketplace has a fixed id and belongs to one regional SP-API endpoint.
